Middle School Golf League

Teaching the basics of golf, providing an opportunity to play the game in an organized league and creating for the youth of the Glynn County area a passion for golf that will continue into high school and their adult lives. 


What is the Middle School Golf League?

League play clinics will be held on Saturdays, between 1:00 pm-3:00 pm at Jekyll Island Golf Club, 233 Captain Wylly Road, Jekyll Island, GA 31527. The season officially begins with an orientation and clinic conducted by golf course teaching professionals and high school/middle school golf coaches in Glynn County. Following will be four weeks of team competition including one week “High School Day” where high school team golfers are invited to play along with their cluster middle school teams and the season culminates with a final Team Competition and Awards Party.

  1. Fill out this form by Wednesday, August 21st to reserve your spot for Tryouts on Saturday, August 24th, from 1:00-3:00 pm at Jekyll Island Golf Club. There is no fee for trying out!
  2. Have your parent or guardian join you at Tryouts. Team rosters will be announced that day and registration will take place on-site!

What does the registration fee cover?

If you are selected for team play, the registration fee of $135.00 covers your Team shirt, equipment, greens fee, and golf instruction. Scholarships are available for students on free or reduced lunch or if the family is experiencing financial hardship. Parents must complete a scholarship form during registration.

what does the schedule look like?

Week 1 Saturday, October 5

Orientation and Clinic

Players will take a tour of the course to discuss rules and etiquette and work on golf fundamentals: Grip, Aim, Alignment, Distance response, Target Awareness and Body Balance. Players will rotate through stations: putting, chipping, pitching and full swing.

Weeks 2 Saturday, October 12

Team Building & Skills Challenge 

Players will compete in a Drive, Chip & Putt team competition.

Week 3 Saturday, October 19

Stroke Play vs. Scramble

Players will learn the difference between stroke play & scramble formats and then play a 6-hole match. 3 Holes Stroke Play & 3 Holes Scramble

Week 4 Saturday, October 26

Brunswick High and Glynn Academy-High School Day

Middle school players will partner with players from their feeder high school in a 9-hole team competition (scramble).

Week 5 Saturday, November 2 (Ga/Fl Weekend)

Game Day Skills Challenge

Players will compete in various team skills challenges around Ga/Fl game day theme.

Week 6 Saturday, November 9

Final Team Competition & Awards Ceremony (9 Hole Scramble)

Frequently Asked Questions

Q:  What is the deadline for registration?

A:  Registration begins immediately following tryouts on August 24th and closes on September 2nd. Registration fee must be paid at the time of registration.

Q: What is the cost of registration?

A: The registration fee is $135 for the full 6 weeks. Scholarships are available for children on free or reduced lunch or if the family is experiencing financial hardship. Parents must complete a scholarship form during registration.

Q:  What does the registration fee pay for? What is provided?

A:  The registration fee helps us cover the cost of golf instruction by teaching professionals, lead coaches, team gear, awards, and the administration of the program.

Q: Who may register? Will you take anyone other than middle school students?

A:  It is a middle school league.  There are other opportunities for younger golfers with The First Tee of the Golden Isles programming throughout the year.

Q:  Do players need to already know the rules of golf and be able to play?  Does the league take beginners?

A:  During tryouts players will be led through a series of skills challenges in driving, chipping and putting. Players earning the most overall points in all three categories will qualify for a spot on the team (2 boys and 2 girls from each school). Players who do not qualify for the on-course competition will be eligible to be a part of the team by participating in a series of player development clinics lead by a Glynn County High School Coach, First Tee Coach or a golf teaching professional. There will be no more than 8 spots available for player development clinics. We will have optional practice days for beginning golfers or those wanting to work on ball striking and fundamentals. Parents will be responsible for their student’s supervision during range practice time which is not lead by professional staff or lead coaches nor The First Tee of the Golden Isles.

Q:  Do players need to provide their own clubs?

A:  No, The First Tee of the Golden Isles will furnish players with proper golfing equipment during the 6-week period.  However, players are encouraged to bring their own clubs if they have them.

Q:  Do players need to have golf shoes?

A:  No, in fact, we recommend against it as often with young players the cleats can cause damage to the greens.  Sneakers or athletic shoes are a better option.

Q: Do boys and girls play on the same team?

A: Yes, we are co-ed and boys and girls play on the same middle school teams.

Q: Do girls play from different tees?

A: Everyone plays from the tees that they are best able to play from. We as a league, boys and girls, play from either the forward tees (red) or junior tees.

Q:  Does each team have adult supervision?

A:  We will have a Lead Golf Coach with each team, generally coaches from the Glynn County High School/Middle School golf teams or teaching professionals from their respective golf course. Because of the number of players on the team, each team may need additional volunteer assistant coaches.  These are volunteers (usually parents), who go thru The First Tee background screening and online training before the season begins.

All coaches (lead and volunteer assistant coaches), will be asked to supervise play, ensure safety, help reinforce instruction, explain rules of golf and ensure proper golf course conduct, etiquette, and respect for the course and other players.   

Q:  Besides Saturday play, are there other practice or meeting times?

A: No. We do not have required team practice outside of Saturday league play. Coaches have the option of requesting parent supervised practice time during the week. Parents must coordinate with the golf course directly.

Q:  After the season are there other golf experiences available for Middle School players?

A:  We promote other The First Tee junior programs, lessons and opportunities for development that are available at Jekyll Island Golf Club, Laurel Island Links, Sanctuary Golf Club, Sea Island Retreat and Osprey Cove Golf Club.

Q:  Players are provided golf shirts and hats. Are there any other requirements involving what they wear or need?

A:  We want our players to learn what proper golf attire is. We ask them not to wear jeans. Depending on the weather, shorts, skirts, skorts or long pants are fine.  Sneakers or athletic shoes are recommended. Golf gloves may be purchased and worn.

Q: What happens when there is inclement weather? If it rains before or during play?

A:  The local golf courses determine whether we can play or not and when we must stop play (danger, i.e., storms, lightning, etc.). Most golf courses have a loud horn that signals lighting or bad weather and that we must evacuate the course. As in professional and even recreational golf, play may continue during light rain. Rain gear may be worn, and golf umbrellas are certainly allowed on the courses. Play may stop and resume as weather permits. Coaches and The First Tee staff are advised to monitor the weather situation.
